Dr. Sanjay Gupta Reports: Big Hits, Broken Dreams

On any given Friday at countless American high schools over four million kids are playing tackle football. Those kids are going head to head and helmet to helmet. But this isn't all fun and games. This sport can be as dangerous as it gets.

Just ask the team at JH Rose High School in North Carolina. Three years ago, the worst happened to this championship team. A tragedy they've little explored, until now. There's a price to be paid by these players on the front lines and lessons to be learned from their experience.

CNN's Senior Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta spent the season with the Rose Rampants, a team trying hard to turn tragedy into triumph. But can they win games and stay safe?

You'll meet players, families and doctors who will tell you something you might not want to hear.. but its something that may just save our kids.

"Big Hits, Broken Dreams" premieres this Sunday at 8:00 pm ET, replaying at 11:00 pm ET and 2:00 am ET.

Excellant program, however there is a concern not discussed in the report. The program in Pitt County is utilizing graduate student athletic trainers from East Carolina University. A selling point was that the school corporation is only paying 1/3 of what it would normally cost for a full-time athletic trainer. However as part of state mandated University budget cuts, the athletic training graduate program is on the potential chopping block for elimination.

I just watched Big Hits Broken Dreams tonight. Will it be rebroadcast again soon? My husband coaches high school football and I would like him to see it. Maybe purchasing a video is an available option?

Is it possible to buy a DVD of this program, or is there a podcast available? My granddaughter got a concussion two weeks ago while playing basketball. She is 12 years old and and still scores low on the computer test. Her parents do not whether she should be going to school, reading etc. Where can one find the protocal to follow?

Looks like you're pre-empting this show again – I'm showing a CNN Presents "Life and Death of Whitney Houston" in the February 18th 8PM, 11PM and Sunday 2AM time slots. Do you have a new time for rebroadcasting "Big Hits, Broken Dreams"??

I'm an athletic trainer in an inner city high school in Kansas City, KS, and would love a copy of this to show to my football team, we've been struggling with kids hiding their symptoms and need to show the consequences of their actions. Thank you for making people aware of the importance of ATCs in practices and games.

CNN's February 4th rebroadcast of Sanjay Gupta's Big Hits/Broken Dreams was pre-empted by the Nevada Caucus coverage in our area. Will it be rebroadcast? If so, when? If not, how can we obtain a copy? Can it be viewed on the internet? If so, how do you get to it?
